A trial version Networking program for Windows
Windows NT / Windows 2000 / Windows 95 / Windows 98 SE / Windows 98
NeoTrace Pro is a classic program that allows you to map or trace websites and IP addresses graphically.
NeoTrace Pro is a graphical networking tool that allows you to trace the source of any IP address or website automatically, as well as pull important data like domain registrar information, network block data and more.
The program basically performs what’s known as a “traceroute” on IP addresses and websites; for website searches NeoTrace just “translates” a domain name into an IP address that can be traced.
For example, if you’re receiving nonstop requests (also known as "pinging") from an unknown domain or IP address, you can run a visual traceroute with NeoTrace Pro and find a lot of useful information. You’ll be able to see how many hops exist between you and the target, where they’re located physically, what ISP they’re using (so you can lodge a complaint), as well as any other relevant data.
The program works in real time, you'll even be able to watch the traceroute prograss as it works backward from one “hop” (major network node) to the next until you trace the IP back to the source. It’s fun to watch and can help you learn more about how the traceroute process works – you even get a little window at the bottom that shows you the backend console at work so you can familiarize yourself with the process.
It’s important to point out that this app was first developed in the late 90s and was eventually sold to McAfee, the anti-virus giant. Development of this program has all but ceased; while this tool is still very useful and easy to use, there may be other programs out there that offer a more updated interface and a better GUI that may be easier to use for novices.
While this app is somewhat dated it still offers a really neat look into how the traceroute protocol works for Windows users, so we definitely think it’s worth giving a try!
